Old Dominion Freight Line still makes its stand in Dixie, but the trucking company serves the rest of the US, as well. It transports general commodities in less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments, in which freight from multiple shippers is consolidated into a single truckload. Old Dominion operates a fleet of some 5,000 tractors and more than 20,000 trailers from around 200 service centers. Founded in 1934, Old Dominion directly serves the 48 contiguous states of continental US and offers service elsewhere in North America, Central America, South America, and Asia. The founding Congdon family controls Old Dominion.

Pretty Awesome Mileage, that's the goal here. Through its subsidiaries, truckload carrier P.A.M. Transportation Services moves freight over the road throughout the US and in parts of Canada; the company offers service in Mexico through arrangements with other carriers. It has a fleet of about 1,700 tractors and 4,600 trailers overall. A majority of the company's sales come from automakers and suppliers to the auto industry; General Motors accounts for about 25%. For many of its major customers, P.A.M. provides dedicated fleet services, in which drivers and equipment are assigned to a particular customer or route long-term.

Truckload carrier Pan American Express hauls freight throughout the US and Canada and arranges service into Mexico through partnerships with Mexican trucking companies. The company operates a fleet of about 160 tractors and 475 trailers from terminals in Dallas, Harlingen, and Laredo, Texas, and in Romulus, Michigan. Company president Ricardo Guardado owns a majority interest in Pan American Express.

The prospect of moving freight is what makes this Panther pounce. Panther Expedited Services arranges the ground, air, and ocean transportation of time-sensitive cargo, primarily for companies in the automotive and other manufacturing industries but also for government agencies and for other transportation companies. The company transports its more than 10,000 customers' freight globally through a network of almost 1,100 owner-operated vehicles, 1,600 third-party ground-carriers, and an additional 500 ocean and air cargo carriers. It also offers warehousing and logistics services. Private equity firm Fenway Partners owns a controlling stake in the company. In mid-2010 Panther filed to go public.

Patriot Transportation Holding gets tanked whenever it can. The company's Transportation segment, comprising Florida Rock & Tank Lines subsidiary, transports liquid and dry bulk commodities, mainly petroleum (including ethanol) and chemicals, in tank trucks. Patriot Transportation's combined fleet of about 400 trucks and more than 500 trailers operates primarily in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic US. Customer Murphy Oil accounts for almost 25% of segment revenues. The company's Real Estate unit, comprising Florida Rock Properties and FRP Development, owns office and warehouse properties, as well as sand and gravel deposits on the East Coast that are leased to Vulcan Materials Company.
