Trucking company Penn Tank Lines specializes in transporting petroleum and petroleum products, including asphalt. The company operates from a network of more than 25 terminals in the eastern half of the US, spanning several states from New Hampshire to Florida. President and CEO Jack McSherry founded Penn Tank Lines in 1974. The company was combined with the petroleum division of Fleet Transport in 1995.

Helping its customers keep food products cool, Petit Forestier provides refrigerated trucks and trailers to food suppliers and food processors all over France and in several European countries. The company maintains a fleet of about 21,000 vehicles from some 80 domestic facilities and more than 20 agent locations in Europe. The company operates from a network of about 20 terminals, primarily in the mid-West and mid-Atlantic US. Besides LTL freight hauling and logistics services, the company provides truckload transportation through ECM Transport. The family of company president Charles Hammel III owns Pitt Ohio, which has grown from a business established by Hammel's grandfather in 1919.

PlanGraphics can do more than read a map. The company provides IT services for geographic information systems (GIS), computer-based mapping applications used with database management software to analyze customer demographics, mineral exploration, military surveillance, crop forecasting, and other data. PlanGraphics' customers include government entities, utilities, and corporations, such as Entergy and the US Army Corps of Engineers. In 2009 Integrated Freight Corp., a Florida-based transportation company, acquired a majority stake in PlanGraphics, which then acquired Integrated Freight. The merged company then sold PlanGraphics' operating subsidiary to CEO John Antenucci.

As far as bulk carriers go, Quality Distribution (QDI) is the bulkiest: It's the largest tank truck operator in North America. Its main subsidiary, Quality Carriers (QCI), transports bulk chemical products in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The company's fleet consists of about 2,800 tractors and 6,400 tank trailers. Major customers include Dow Chemical, DuPont, Procter & Gamble, and PPG Industries. QDI also provides dry bulk hauling, transloading, tank cleaning, intermodal transport, container and depot services, and logistics services through its subsidiaries Quality Transload & Terminals and Boasso America. Affiliates of investment firm Apollo Advisors hold more than 50% of the company.
