Italians say "pronto" to Vodafone Omnitel. The competitive wireless services carrier operates the #2 mobile phone network in Italy by the number of subscribers, after rival Telecom Italia. Vodafone Omnitel, under the Vodafone Italia brand, has more than 30 million consumer and business subscribers. The company, which also provides broadband Internet service, has more than 80 offices and eight call centers across Italy. UK-based Vodafone Group owns 77% of Vodafone Omnitel; Verizon Communications, headquartered in New York, owns the remaining 23% stake.

Vodafone Portugal, Comunicacoes Pessoais is the #2 wireless telecommunications provider in Portugal after incumbent carrier Portugal Telecom. The company serves about 4 million subscribers over its nationwide cellular network based on GSM (global system for mobile communications) technology. In addition to mobile telecom services, which include voice and data transmission as well as multimedia downloads and mobile Web access, Vodafone Portugal offers fixed-line voice and data telecom services to corporate clients throughout the country. The company is a subsidiary of UK-based wireless phone carrier Vodafone Group.

The Greek affiliate of UK-based wireless phone giant Vodafone Group, Vodafone-Panafon (also known as Vodafone Greece) offers mobile telecommunications services to about 4 million subscribers. The company's services include Internet access (provided under the Vodafone NET brand), wireless data services including text and multimedia messages, multimedia such as games, music, news, and entertainment programming (Vodafone live!). Vodafone-Panafon sells its services and distributes cell phones from about 400 retail locations and online.

Wi-LAN hopes that its wireless technology patents translate into a license to print money. Prviously a manufacturer of wireless equipment, the company has shifted its efforts to primarily focus on licensing its technology to equipment manufacturers. Wi-LAN has licensed its patents to more than 200 clients who incorporate it into wireless, wireline, and V-Chip (used to filter out inappropriate television programming) technology. Clients have included Cisco, Nokia, Panasonic, and Samsung. The company's portfolio includes over 750 patents.

WILLCOM provides wireless data and voice services to corporate and consumer customers in Japan. The company launched its service in 1995 and is the largest operator employing Personal Handyphone System (PHS) technology. PHS is a kind of stripped-down cellular service with relatively low charges; the technology was developed in Japan and most of its users live in Japan and China. A former subsidiary of KDDI, WILLCOM provides mobile service nationwide in Japan, serving more than 4 million subscribers. The Carlyle Group owns 60% of WILLCOM; Kyocera holds 30% and KDDI 10%. Burdened with debt of more than $2 billion, WILLCOM filed for bankruptcy protection from creditors in 2010.
