Hays Medical Center brings big city health care to rural Kansas. The not-for-profit hospital, which has about 200 beds, provides both acute and tertiary medical care to the Midwestern plains. In addition to medical, surgical, and pediatric care, Hays Medical Center offers home care, hospice, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and behavioral health services, along with centers for cardiac care (the DeBakey Heart Institute) and cancer treatment (the Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Center). The organization also operates specialty and rural health clinics. Hays Medical Center grows through selective acquisitions, such as its buys of Hays Orthopaedic Clinic and, in 2010, a physician practice focused on breast health.
