First Electric Cooperative wasn't the first electric cooperative ever formed, but it was the first such entity created in its home state. The member-owned utility distributes power to more than 85,000 customers in 17 central and southeastern Arkansas counties. It also offers its members a range of energy products and value-added services, including energy efficient Marathon water heaters, surge and lightning protection equipment, and compact fluorescent light bulbs. Some 72% of the cooperative's revenues come from residential customers; commercial and industrial customers account for another 20%, and the rest comes from such sources as irrigation and street lighting.

The Native American inhabitants of Georgia may have used flint to spark the fires that brought light to their dwellings. Central Georgians today rely on the Flint Electric Membership Corporation, which does business as Flint Energies, to light their homes. Flint Energies serves 250,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers (through 82,500 meters) in 17 counties, Fort Benning, and the city of Warner Robins. The customer-owned cooperative operates more than 6,250 miles of distribution line and about 50 substations. Flint Energies first flicked the switch in 1937.

Florida Municipal Power Agency doesn't believe in holding on to power. The non-profit public agency generates and supplies electric power to 30 county or municipally owned distribution utilities, which in turn serve 2 million Florida residents and businesses. Each of the distribution utilities appoints one representative to Florida Municipal Power Agency's board of directors, which governs the agency's activities. The Agency is authorized to undertake joint projects for its members and to issue tax-exempt bonds to finance the costs of such projects. It is also empowered to implement a pooled financing program for utility-related projects.

Sometimes the sunshine state just isn't bright enough, and that's when Florida Power (doing business as Florida Power) really shines. The utility transmits and distributes electricity to 1.6 million customers and oversees more than 10,000 MW of generating capacity from interests in 14 nuclear and coal-, oil-, and gas-fired power plants. Additionally, Florida Power purchases about 20% of the energy it provides. The company is interconnected with 22 municipal power systems and with nine rural electric cooperative systems. Florida Power, a subsidiary of holding company Progress Energy, also sells wholesale power to other utilities and marketers.

Fortis wields power. The group has holdings in 10 companies, primarily regulated electricity and gas distributors, serving about 2 million customers. Its Terasen unit is the major natural gas distribution utility in British Columbia and serves approximately 940,000 customers. Newfoundland Power utility distributes electricity to 240,000 people, while Maritime Electric serves customers on Prince Edward Island. FortisOntario serves parts of Ontario, and FortisAlberta distributes electricity to 480,000 customers in Alberta. FortisBC generates, transmits, and distributes electricity in southern British Columbia. Fortis Generation operates hydroelectric plants, and Fortis Properties runs hotels in Canada.
