On Saturday (October 31), it will one year of Jammu and Kashmir acquiring the Union Territory status.
On August 5, 2019, the Narendra Modi government made the monumental decision to change the status of Jammu and Kashmir. Through a Presidential Order, the government declared that Article 370 would cease to be operative, and specifically overrode a previous order that made Article 35A a part of the Constitution of India, thereby ending the special status accorded to the region.
Incidentally, the new UT came into existence on the National Unity Day, marked as the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first home minister and freedom fighter.
According to the Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation) Bill, 2019, UT J&K will have a Lieutenant Governor, a chief minister, the council of ministers not exceeding more than 10 per cent strength of the total number of legislatures in the Assembly.
The tenure of Jammu and Kashmir assembly is now be reduced to five years, which was earlier 6 years due to J&K's special status.

Beverage major Coca-Cola is set to reduce the price of its 400 ml PET bottles from Rs 25 to Rs 20 in at least southern markets within a week, The Times of India reported on Wednesday.

India's gold demand in 2024 is likely to fall to its lowest in four years as a rally in prices to a record high is seen denting purchases during the peak festival season in the December quarter, the World Gold Council (WGC) said on Wednesday.
Gold demand in the world's second-biggest consumer of the precious metal could stand between 700 and 750 metric tons in 2024, the lowest since 2020 and down from last year's 761 tons, Sachin Jain, CEO of WGC's Indian operations, told Reuters.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan received another death threat on Wednesday through a message to the Mumbai Traffic Police, demanding a ransom of Rs 2 crore. The police have registered a case against an unidentified individual, who allegedly threatened serious harm to the actor if the ransom was not paid. The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday granted interim bail to actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who is an accused in Renukaswamy murder case, on medical grounds, to undergo spine surgery.
The bench of Justice S Vishwajith Shetty granted interim bail for a period of six weeks to undergo medical treatment.
