Sharp HealthCare wants to be on the cutting edge of health care delivery in Southern California. The system of not-for-profit hospitals and healthcare facilities is the San Diego area's largest. The medical center's emergency department receives some 50,000 visits each year. Shepherd Center is not-for-profit hospital specializes in medical treatment, research, and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord and brain injuries, as well as patients with neuromuscular disorders (such as spina bifida) and chronic pain. Shepherd Hospital has about 130 beds (including a 10-bed intensive care unit). Of its patients who have suffered injuries, about 60% have been in car accidents. Founded in 1975 by James Shepherd (who was paralyzed in a bodysurfing accident) and his family, the hospital conducts neurological and neuromuscular research through its Virginia C. Crawford Research Institute.

Sheridan Community Hospital certainly lives up to its "community" moniker. Local volunteers are considered a mainstay of the hospital, logging more than 4,000 hours of service every year. The facility offers residents of Montcalm, Michigan and surrounding counties emergency services, occupational health, cardiology, orthopedics, and general surgery. The hospital has begun testing the waters of 21st century technology by investing in digital imaging and high-tech scanning systems. Sheridan Community Hospital has also opened Edmore Care-West, its second family practice location in Edmore.

Sherman Health Systems serves Chicago's northwest suburbs. It operates Sherman Hospital, which has more than 250 beds, as well as a network of primary care clinics, a nursing home, and other health care facilities. Among those, 18 specialize in orthopedic conditions, some also specialize in treating serious burn injuries, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lips and palates. Founded by the fellowship Shrine of North America, the hospitals are supported by a multitude of fundraising events organized by 500,000 red fez-wearing members. As a result, these hospitals are able to treat children under 18 years old completely for free. Shriners Hospitals For Children was founded in 1922.

Sierra View District Hospital (SVDH) might have a bedside view of central California's San Joaquin Valley. The not-for-profit 160-bed acute care medical center offers a comprehensive range of primary, specialty, and emergency services in Porterville, California, and surrounding areas. Divisions include oncology, pediatrics, dialysis, diagnostics, women's care, and rehabilitation. SVDH also offers variety of outpatient treatments, as well as laboratory, wellness, and counseling services. Founded in 1948, the hospital serves more than 50,000 patients in its emergency room each year.

Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital is a not-for-profit, 250-bed acute medical facility that serves southeastern Massachusetts. The hospital's emergency department sees more than 60,000 patients per year. Specialized services include cancer treatment (including radiation therapy), cardiac care (including catheterization), pediatrics, orthopedics, and psychiatry. Brockton Hospital is an affiliated teaching hospital of the Tufts Medical Center. The hospital is part of the Signature Healthcare (formerly Brockton Health) network, which also includes affiliated primary care physician practices, specialty outpatient clinics, and a nursing school.
