Shepherd Center
Shepherd Center is not-for-profit hospital specializes in medical treatment, research, and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord and brain injuries, as well as patients with neuromuscular disorders (such as spina bifida) and chronic pain. Shepherd Hospital has about 130 beds (including a 10-bed intensive care unit). Of its patients who have suffered injuries, about 60% have been in car accidents. Founded in 1975 by James Shepherd (who was paralyzed in a bodysurfing accident) and his family, the hospital conducts neurological and neuromuscular research through its Virginia C. Crawford Research Institute.
