Meta Financial Group is the holding company for MetaBank, a thrift with about a dozen branches in Iowa and South Dakota. Municipal Mortgage & Equity (MuniMae) invests in tax-free municipal bonds issued by state and local governments. Those bonds are typically used to build multifamily housing, including units for low-income families, students, and the elderly. The disruption in world credit markets, coupled with a deterioration in the tax-exempt bond market hurt MuniMae. The commercial real estate market also tanked, driving down the values of the company's assets. The company was forced to drastically reduce the size of its business, cut its workforce by 80%, and sell off assets at a loss in order to stay afloat. MuniMae continues to look for ways to reduce debt and raise capital.

NASB Financial is the holding company for North American Savings Bank, which operates about 15 branches and loan offices in the Kansas City area. Established in 1927, the bank offers a range of deposit products to retail and commercial customers, including checking, savings, and money market accounts and CDs. Its lending activities are fairly evenly split between mortgages secured by residential, commercial, and development properties. Subsidiary Nor-Am sells annuities, mutual funds, and credit life and disability insurance. Chairman David Hancock and his wife Linda (a board member) own a majority of NASB Financial.

Naugatuck Valley Financial Corporation (NVFC) owns Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan, a community-based thrift serving southwestern Connecticut. Operating from more than a half-dozen locations, the bank provides traditional retail banking offerings such as checking and savings accounts, CDs, and IRAs. Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan concentrates on residential lending, in addition to construction, multifamily and commercial real estate loans. NVFC and Southern Connecticut Bancorp called off plans to merge in 2010. Naugatuck Valley Mutual Holding Company owns 58% of NVFC's stock.
