The trains of Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) are being driven by a new engineer. In December 2007 the government of Hong Kong, which owns KCRC, combined the company's rail operations with those of commuter rail operator MTR, which also is controlled by the government. Before its operations were merged with MTR's, KCRC provided commuter rail service in the Hong Kong region over three main lines. Its network consisted of some 113 kilometers (70 miles) of track. Although MTR runs the combined system, KCRC retains ownership of its rail-related assets and receives payments from MTR under a 50-year contract, which may be extended.

The majority of MRL’s main line is single track with passing sidings and is controlled by Centralized Traffic Control from the Transportation Center in Missoula. The railroad is one of two operating within the Washington Companies. The other, Southern Railway of British Columbia (SRY Rail Link), is also a Class II based in New Westminster, B.C., Canada.

A company on the fast track, MTR operates Hong Kong's commuter railway system. The company's network was expanded significantly in 2007 through a combination with the rail operations of Kowloon-Canton Railway. Overall, MTR operates about 210 km of track in Hong Kong, Kowloon, the New Territories, and mainland China, plus a light rail network in the New Territories, an airport express line, and bus feeder services. Although railway operations make up the bulk of its business, MTR also manages residential and commercial properties near its stations. Through its Octopus Cards subsidiary, the company provides smart card technology for fare collection. The Hong Kong government owns a controlling stake in MTR.

Network Rail took over the UK's railways with backing from the government in 2002 from insolvent Railtrack Group. Network Rail Infrastructure has taken charge of the UK's rail infrastructure. The company, through subsidiary Network Rail , owns, manages, and maintains 21,000 miles of track and 40,000 bridges and tunnels in the England, Scotland, and Wales. Network Rail Infrastructure owns the nation's 2,500 railway stations but manages only the 18 largest; the rest of the stations are managed by train operating companies, which provide passenger rail service. Passengers aren't all that ride Network Rail's system -- freight traffic has increased 50% under Network Rail's watch.
