Spanair was a subsidiary of Scandinavian carrier (and Star Alliance member) SAS until early 2009 when SAS sold the company to a group of Spanish investors.

Spirit Airlines aims to lift the spirits of people seeking sunshine: The low-fare carrier makes connections between major US cities and popular vacation spots in Florida, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Overall, Spirit Airlines serves more than 40 destinations. It operates a fleet of about 30 Airbus 319s, 320s, and 321s. In addition to offering scheduled passenger service, the company works with partners in the travel industry to sell vacation packages through its Web site. Investment firm Indigo Partners, an aviation industry specialist, owns a majority interest in Spirit Airlines, which was founded in 1980 as Charter One.

The SUN-AIR rises over the skies of Scandinavia and so do its passengers. The company provides scheduled and charter flights to select destinations in northwestern Europe as a franchise partner of British Airways, using the British Airways brand and livery. SUN-AIR operates a fleet of Dornier 328 turboprop and jet aircraft. It also leases aircraft and provides individual charter flights for companies. In addition, SUN-AIR provides technical support and maintenance for commuter and general aircraft at three service centers in Denmark. President and CEO Niels Sundberg owns the company, which he founded the company in 1978.

Swiss International Air Lines hopes to plot a course to prosperity under the wing of Deutsche Lufthansa. The carrier, known as SWISS, serves about 75 destinations in some 40 countries from its hub in Zurich and from airports in Basel and Geneva; it operates a fleet of more than 75 aircraft. SWISS was acquired by German airline giant Lufthansa in 2007, and the carriers' flight operations are being coordinated. As part of the Lufthansa deal, SWISS has joined its parent in the Star Alliance, an international code-sharing and marketing partnership that also includes carriers such as UAL's United Airlines. (Code-sharing allows airlines to extend their networks by selling tickets on one another's flights.)
