Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is one of the leading government-sponsored research centers in the US. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory performs basic and applied research in such areas as environmental studies, nanoscience, and quantitative biology, as well as physics and nuclear energy. During its history, 11 of the lab's scientists have won the Nobel Prize while 13 have won the National Medal of Science. The lab is funded by the US Department of Energy and managed by the University of California. Former director Steven Chu left the lab in 2009 to become the US energy secretary. Berkeley Lab was started in 1931 by Ernest Orlando Lawrence, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist in the area of high-energy physics.
