Nationale Bank van Belgie
No prizes for guessing the role of the Nationale Bank van Belgie. NBB is, indeed, the national central bank for Belgium and a member of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB). The institution performs a variety of functions aimed at maintaining stability and liquidity for Belgium's banks and financial markets, including arranging fund transfers between banks, overseeing settlement activities for securities markets, and issuing banknotes and coins. The bank's chief executive, known as its governor, is appointed by the Belgian monarch. NBB is also known by its names in French (Banque nationale de Belgique), English (National Bank of Belgium), and German (Belgische Nationalbank).
