Its purpose was to promote appreciation of Kathakali and to popularise the classical dance and arts allied to it. A school for teaching the Kathakali dance formed an integral part of the Centre from its inception.

The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), a non-profit cultural organisation, was established in 1966. The Centre is engaged in the preservation and promotion of India's rich cultural heritage in classical and folk music, dance and drama. It receives support from the Government of India and International bodies, such as the Ford Foundation and UNESCO.
