Aviation
Andhra Pradesh is well connected both domestically
and internationally by air. Regular air services to
Hyderabad, Vishakapatnam and Tirupathi are offered by
regional airlines. Smaller airfields are available for
private jets and are well equipped with basic facilities
spread in 17 locations across the state.
Currently the Hyderabad international airport at Begumpet
is the sixth busiest airport in India handling around
735 international movements and 3,190 domestic movements.
It has been declared a full-fledged customs port, with
an air cargo complex having customs clearance facilities.
The airport at Visakhapatnam is taken up for upgrading
with Rs. 100 crores. The Vijayawada airport at Gannavaram
has also been modernised recently. Boeing landing facilities
are now available at Vijayawada, Tirupati and Puttaparti.
The New Hyderabad International Airport , is being
developed on the lines of a public-private partnership
model between the GMR Group, Malaysia Airports Holdings
Berhad and both the State Government of Andhra Pradesh
and Airports Authority of India (AAI). GMR Group holds
63% of the equity, MAHB 11%, while the Government of
Andhra Pradesh and Airports Authority of India each
hold 13%.
The new airport will leverage the multiple advantages
of Hyderabad city. The airport's strategic location
will help significantly reduce travel time on domestic
and international routes and therefore, dramatically
cut down fuel costs.
Given its strategic importance, Hyderabad is poised
to become an important hub on the global aviation map.Some
of the International Airlines operating from Hyderabad
are Lufthansa Airlines, KLM Airlines, Singapore Airlines,
Malaysian Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airlines, Oman Airlines
Indian Airlines, Air India, Saudi Airlines and Srilankan
Airlines.
Railways
Andhra Pradesh offers effective rail connectivity to
all major cities of the country for the transportation
of goods traffic such as Coal, Iron ore, Cement, Food
grains, Fertilizers, Minerals, Petroleum products and
general merchandise.
The South Central Railway is headquarterd at Secunderabad
with divisional headquarters at Secunderabad, Hyderabad,
Guntakal, Vijayawada, Nanded and Guntur serving the
area falling under Andhra Pradesh, Parts of Maharashtra,
Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The Government of Andhra Pradesh has outlined the Mass
Rapid Transport System (MRTS) to address the problem
of vehicular congestion and provide an efficient mode
of transportation. The Multi Modal Transport System
(MMTS) of Hyderabad covers 43 Kms of suburban route
with facilities such as passenger concourse areas, platforms,
booking counters, washrooms and signage have been created
very aesthetically and in a passenger friendly manner.
The Hyderabad Metro Rail Project is also being taken
up to meet the movement of commuters in the Greater
Hyderabad. Government of India has approved the project
and detailed DPR is being prepared. The project will
be promoted in the lines of Delhi Metro
Roads
The state of Andhra Pradesh has total road network
of 1,79,980 kms and has 12 national highways. The Golden
quadrilateral Corridor Project of the country covers
about 1014 Kms in the State with the project cost of
Rs 25.46 billion.
The State Government has sought the process of Build,
Operate and Transfer (BOT) for sustained maintenance
and planned development of the road infrastructure.
The Hyderabad Outer Ring Road is one such project developed
by HUDA. Expressway (Flyover) from Mehdipatnam Junction
to Shamshabad International Airport is being undertaken
by the developer GMR constructions. A Number of Flyovers
are also being constructed across the Hyderabad city
to ease the ever-growing traffic.
