La Leche League International (LLLI), the global organization promotes and encourages breastfeeding and offers information on both nursing and childrearing for parents and medical professionals. La Leche League International strives to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother. La Leche League International 7,000 "leaders" offer more than 3,000 breastfeeding support groups each month. The not-for-profit group also distributes information in more than 30 languages, including publications, videos, and audio books. La Leche League was founded in 1956 by a group of seven nursing mothers. During the 1950s, words such as "breast" and "breastfeeding" weren't used in polite conversation, so the founders took their group's name from "leche," the Spanish word for milk.
