American Chemical Society
The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world's largest scientific society. It provides information, career development, and educational resources to member chemists, chemical engineers, and technicians. ACS also publishes dozens of magazines, journals, and books, and its Chemical Abstracts Service provides access to an online database of more than 25 million literature and research summaries from around the world. ACS also serves as an advocate for its members on public policy issues. The ACS Member Insurance Program provides insurance plans to members. The not-for-profit organization was founded in 1876 and chartered by Congress in 1937.
The Petroleum Research Fund was originally established as a Trust by seven major oil companies in 1944. The American Chemical Society, to whom the assets of the Fund were transferred in 2000, administers grants made to nonprofit institutions in the United States and other countries in response to proposals. Since the first ACS PRF grants were approved in 1954, several grant programs have evolved to serve segments of the scientific community. ACS PRF funding commitments in 2007 totaled $25.2 million.
