South Korea's leading carmaker, Hyundai Motor produces compact and luxury cars, SUVs, and minivans, as well as trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles. The company re-established itself as South Korea's leading carmaker in 1998 by acquiring a 51% stake in Kia Motors (since reduced to about 34%). Selling cars in the US since 1986, Hyundai started selling its heavy trucks stateside in 1998. Hyundai's models for the North American market include the Accent and Sonata; models sold elsewhere include the GRD and Equus. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) speaks Korean with a Southern drawl. A subsidiary of South Korea's Hyundai Motor, HMMA began construction of its plant in 2002. The $1.4 billion facility turned out its first car, the Sonata sedan, in 2005. The factory includes a stamping facility, paint shop, vehicle assembly shop, and a two-mile testing track. At full capacity, HMMA will produce about 300,000 vehicles per year. Cars and SUVs built by HMMA are distributed throughout the US by sister company Hyundai Motor America, and they are sold and serviced by more than 900 US Hyundai dealerships.

Isuzu Motors America was once a real Trooper, but its passenger vehicles have seen their last Rodeo in the US. Up until it withdrew from the US market in early 2008, Isuzu Motors America (ISZA) distributed Isuzu cars (including the once popular Rodeo), pickups, and SUVs. Parent company Isuzu Motors reinvented the American subsidiary for the manufacture of more than 30 different models of land and marine industrial diesel engines for customers including Renault, Opel, and General Motors, locating the home base for the PowerTrain division in Michigan. Isuzu's dealer network services Isuzu vehicles in the US. Isuzu Commercial Truck of America still distributes its H, N, & F series with low-cab-forward design.

Kanto Auto Works, Ltd. was founded in 1946 as Kanto Electric Motor Works when a Japanese naval base was reconstructed for peace-time industry; it changed its name to Kanto Auto Works four years later. Kanto also manufactures car-lifting equipment for vehicle maintenance. Kanto Auto Works brings a can-do attitude to its service for Toyota Motor. Starting with the Toyopet car, Kanto Auto Works has been making auto bodies for Toyota since 1950. The company's Higashi Fuji plant makes the bodies for eight Toyota and Lexus models, including the Corolla sedan and the Isis minivan. Kanto's Iwate plant builds bodies for five Toyota vehicles.

Kia's US models include the Rio subcompact, the Sportage SUV, the Optima mid-size sedan, and the Sorento crossover. Kia also makes a number of commercial vehicles. Its high-capacity plants outside Korea are in the US, Slovakia, and China. After Korea, Kia's second-largest market is the US. Part of the Hyundia Kia Automotive Group, Kia operates as an affiliate of Hyundai Motor, which owns about a 35% stake in Kia. During tough economic times, pretty-good quality coupled with lower-than-Japan and Detroit prices translates into sales for South Korea's #2 carmaker (behind Hyundai Motor). Kia Motors produces some 1.5 million vehicles a year at nearly a dozen manufacturing and assembly plant in eight countries.
