Big Yellow Group may conjure up an image of giant bananas, but they want their storage properties to be the main appeal. The company owns and operates some 60 self-storage facilities in the UK (and has several more under development), most of which are located in London. Closing in on 3.5 million square feet of space, Big Yellow acquires and develops its distinctive big yellow storage sites at highly visible locations; it offers 24-hour security and unlimited visits to it customers. Expanding outside the UK, the company has acquired property in the United Arab Emirates. In 2009, Big Yellow acquired the 10-unit Armadillo Self Storage portfolio. Big Yellow became a real estate investment trust (REIT) in 2007.

BioMed Realty Trust, Inc. company acquires, develops, leases, and manages research laboratories and offices for biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical firms, research institutions, and other life science tenants. BioMed owns more than 70 properties in about a dozen states; the properties contain around 120 buildings and total approximately 11 million sq. ft. of rentable space. The REIT's preferred markets include research and development hubs such as Boston, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle.

Cominar Real Estate Investment Trust is one of the largest owners and managers of commercial property in Quebec, with more than 200 office, retail, industrial, and mixed-use properties totaling more than 18 million sq. ft. of space. (Industrial and mixed-use properties represent most of its holdings.) In its largest acquisition to date, the REIT acquired nearly 50 properties totaling more than 6 million sq. ft. from Alexis Nihon in 2007. Three years later, the firm expanded into Atlantic Canada with the purchase of Overland Realty. Cominar was founded in 1965 by Quebec City entrepreneur Jules Dallaire.

DCT Industrial Trust Inc owns interests in or manages about 450 buildings totaling some 75 million sq. ft. Bulk distribution warehouses account for a majority of the company's rentable space. Companies in the manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, and transportation and warehousing sectors make up most of DCT's clients. Major tenants include CEVA Logisitics, Bridgestone, Technicolor, and UPS.

Digital Realty Trust, Inc. owns properties that are leased to firms in the technology sector. Its portfolio includes more than 90 properties in the US, Europe, and Asia, including data communications hubs, electronic storage and processing centers, tech manufacturing facilities, and offices of tech companies. All told, the REIT owns more than 16 million sq. ft. of rentable space, including space held for redevelopment. Digital Realty Trust focuses on properties in hot tech markets such as Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, New Jersey, New York, northern Virginia, and California's San Francisco Bay area and Silicon Valley (its largest market).
