Strategic Hotels & Resorts (SHR) is a busy BEE when it comes to hospitality. The self-administered and self-managed real estate investment trust (REIT), which is traded under the symbol BEE, owns or has interests in more than 15 upscale and luxury hotels (some 8,000 rooms) in the US, Europe, and Mexico. It also leases a handful of hotel properties from landlords in Europe. SHR also owns land for development, which is adjacent to existing hotel resorts. Affiliated brands include Four Seasons, Hyatt, InterContinental, and Marriott. Its hotels, which comprise more than 6,500 rooms, operate primarily under brands owned by Marriott International, as well as Hilton, Hyatt, and ICH. Shortly after its formation in 2010, Summit Hotel filed to go public and registered to convert into a real estate investment trust (REIT) for federal tax purposes.

Sunstone Hotel Investors, a real estate investment trust (REIT), invests in, develops, and renovates mostly upscale and upper-upscale hotels. The company owns about 30 hotels with nearly 12,000 rooms in 15 states. Most of Sunstone Hotel Investors' properties are located in Southern California. Most also have affiliations with such franchises as Hilton Worldwide, Hyatt, Marriott, and Starwood. The REIT's hotels are managed by third parties; a division of Interstate Hotels & Resorts operates more than half of the properties.

The self-administered real estate investment trust (REIT) owns some 115 limited-service and midscale hotels containing more than 9,000 rooms. The hotels are located in about 20 primarily Midwestern and eastern states and operate under such franchised brand names as Super 8, Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Days Inn, Hampton Inn, and Sleep Inn. The hotels are leased to the REIT's taxable subsidiaries, and most are managed by Royco Hotels, with a small number managed by HLC; both are independent contractors. Supertel Hospitality also develops hotel properties on a limited basis.
