Holding company TIM Participações operates through TIM Celular and Tele Nordeste Celular (TND). The two companies offer cellular phone service in three southern states of Brazil and in six northeastern states. TIM Participações operates in the Brazilian states of Paraná and Santa Catarina and in the cities of Pelotas, Capão do Leão, Morro Redondo, and Turuçu in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The company makes sales to retail and business customers through retail locations and points-of-sale operated by other dealers and resellers. TIM Brasil Serviços e Participações S.A. With more than 12 million active subscribers, TracFone is the leading independent reseller of nationwide prepaid wireless telecommunications services. The TracFone product is a pay-as-you-go, off-the-shelf mobile phone featuring prepaid airtime with no annual contracts or activation fees. In order to offer service across the US, TracFone has agreements with about 30 different wireless carriers nationwide, including industry leaders AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless. It sells service and phones nationally through about 70,000 retail outlets, including Wal-Mart and Lowe's, as well as in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. TracFone Wireless is a subsidiary of Latin America's top wireless carrier, América Móvil.

Transatel targets travelers. The company offers discounted international wireless phone services aimed at European frequent travelers. As a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), it resells the service under its own brand but delivers it through other carriers' networks. The company's proprietary smart chip turns all international calls -- incoming and outgoing -- into domestic calls. Since its start in 2000, Transatel has expanded beyond its French roots to operations in Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the UK. Investors in the company include a French government agency that invests in young businesses and the venture capital firm Pyramid Technology Ventures.

Turkcell talks a lot of turkey. The dominant mobile phone operator in Turkey has more than 35 million subscribers, almost half the country's population. Turkcell operates a digital GSM (global system for mobile communications) network throughout Turkey for mobile voice and data services, while international coverage is offered through agreements with foreign providers. Turkcell has operations in six other countries across the Black Sea through equity stakes in subsidiaries. Founding investors include conglomerate Çukurova Group, Russian conglomerate Alfa Group, and Finnish telecom company TeliaSonera. A holding company controlled by Alfa and Çukurova owns 51% of Turkcell. TeliaSonera controls another 13%.

Communication is a two-way street, and TuWay Communications (formerly TuWay Wireless) knows it works both ways. TuWay designs, installs, and maintains wireless communication systems for the public safety, health care, and education sectors, as well as businesses. It offers two-way radio systems, voice-logging recorders, local and regional dispatch services, in-house and wide-area paging systems, wireless data systems, and VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) services. President Bill Landis owns the company, which was founded in 1954 to service Motorola products.
