Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer Francais
France's state-owned railway company, Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer Francais (SNCF), is still blazing a trail as the nation's primary provider of local and long-distance passenger and freight service. Overall, the SNCF network covers 120 countries, spanning more than 32,000 km (almost 20,000 miles) of track and about 3,000 stations. SNCF's Eurostar joint venture shuttles passengers between Paris and London via the Channel Tunnel ("Chunnel"), and high-speed train operator Thalys links Paris with other European capitals. SNCF's high-speed TGV passenger trains travel at up to 350 mph. About one-third of SNCF's revenues are generated outside of France.
