Exelixis Plant Sciences operates millions of small solar-powered factories -- i.e., plants. A subsidiary of cancer-drug-development company, Exelixis, Inc., it focuses on plant genomics (identifying plant DNA sequences and identifying specific genes and their functions) in order to produce natural flavors and colorants for food, health and wellness, and cosmetics manufacturers. Fane Valley Co-operative Society Ltd. was established in 1903 by a group of farmers who wished to improve the marketing of their butter which at that time was produced on the farm. The agricultural co-op offers its members such farm-management supplies and services as grain elevator operations, grain marketing, equipment rental, tires, livestock feed and fertilizer sales, soil sampling, on-staff crop advisors, farm credit and financing, agronomy, and Cenex energy products (diesel, home-heating oil, propane, ethanol, gasoline) from its 10 locations.

The importance of cooperation -- it's one of life's most important lessons. Dating back to the early 1900s, the Farmers Cooperative Company learned that lesson early on. The 5,200-member co-op offers agronomy and grain marketing services to its members, who oversee some 3 million acres of farmland in central and north central Iowa. It operates 40 grain elevators and provides soil testing, and mapping services. It sells supplies including seed, feed, and fertilizer, to its members. Farmers Cooperative is an acquisitive operation. Since the 1960s it has acquired more than 20 other agricultural co-ops, grain elevators, fertilizer manufacturers, and other farm-related businesses.
