Ralcorp Holdings reminds us that you can't judge food by its cover. The company is a top US maker of private-label or "store-brand" ready-to-eat and hot breakfast cereals. Ralcorp has also stocked its pantry with a variety of private-label cookies, crackers, peanut butter, ketchup, snack nuts, candy, and breakfast cereal. In addition, the company makes branded products: Ralston Hot Cereal, Post dry cereals, Ry Krisp crackers, and Rippin' Good cookies. Its Carriage House unit produces private-label dressings, syrups, jellies, and sauces, and its Lofthouse and Parco businesses offer frozen cookies to in-store bakeries. In 2010 Ralcorp announced an offer to acquire American Italian Pasta Company (AIPC).

Harbinger Capital Partners Master Fund owns about 10% of Reddy Ice.

Sara Lee chose cheesecake over clothing. Jettisoning the apparel business, Sara Lee now peddles mostly food and drink, along with some household goods, although it's selling off that business too. Its North American Retail unit is a major packaged meat maker (Ball Park, Jimmy Dean), and a leading manufacturer of frozen bakery products, including Ms. Lee's famous raid-the-refrigerator-at-midnight frozen cheesecakes. The fresh bakery segment supplies North America with prepackaged bread and other baked goods. Sara Lee International oversees coffee, tea, and bakery in Europe, Australia, and Brazil. The North American Foodservice unit supplies coffee, meat, and bakery to foodservice operators across the continent.
