Reddy Ice was born of simple beginnings, an ice company staffed by hardworking folks with a desire to please their customers. Providing a product people needed at a fair price and with excellent service was a recipe for success. As the business of ice making progressed from an industry based on animal power and harvesting ice from rivers in winter, to a technology-based industry with the capacity for year-round production, Reddy Ice was there.Ice is hot stuff, especially when you own the ice factory -- Reddy Ice does, and its proprietary technology lets grocery and convenience stores make and package their own ice automatically. Reddy Ice is the largest US maker and distributor of packaged ice products. It has the capacity to make about 18,000 tons of ice per day. In addition to its Ice Factory machines, the company sells ice in a variety of shapes and sizes (ranging from seven-pound bags to 300-pound blocks) to retail, commercial, and industrial customers throughout 33 US states and in the District of Columbia. Harbinger Capital Partners Master Fund owns about 10% of Reddy Ice.

Sara Lee chose cheesecake over clothing. Jettisoning the apparel business, Sara Lee now peddles mostly food and drink, along with some household goods, although it's selling off that business too. Its North American Retail unit is a major packaged meat maker (Ball Park, Jimmy Dean), and a leading manufacturer of frozen bakery products, including Ms. Lee's famous raid-the-refrigerator-at-midnight frozen cheesecakes. The fresh bakery segment supplies North America with prepackaged bread and other baked goods. Sara Lee International oversees coffee, tea, and bakery in Europe, Australia, and Brazil. The North American Foodservice unit supplies coffee, meat, and bakery to foodservice operators across the continent.
