While on the roads in Marseille, France, sometimes the shortest (and fastest)distance between two points is the Prado-Carenage tunnel. The tunnel is operated by Soci t Marseillaise du Tunnel Prado-Carenage (SMTPC), a private company (consisting of a group of construction companies and lenders) formed in the early 1990s to transform the tunnel, then a 110 year old disused railway tunnel, into a toll-based tunnel connecting the city's busy A50 and A55 highways. The SMTPC, which also has a long-term contract with the City of Marseille to manage and provide security and other services for the tunnel, earns its revenue primarily from toll fees. Completed in 1993, the tunnel is 2.5 kilometers in length.
