Auto major Tata Motors may phase out small diesel cars from its portfolio as demand is expected to slow down due to upcoming BS-VI emission norms that would make such vehicles expensive, according to a senior company official.

Already, market leader Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has stated that it would discontinue diesel models from April 1, 2020, when the BS-VI norms kick in, as it expects the increased cost would put most of the diesel cars, especially the smaller ones, out of reach of small car buyers.

Tata Motors on Thursday reported a 20 per cent decline in total sales during April at 42,577 units as compared with 53,511 units in the same month last year.

The company’s passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market declined by 26 per cent to 12,694 units last month as compared with 17,235 units in April 2018.

Hyundai Motor India is eyeing a leadership position in the compact SUV segment in the country with its upcoming model Venue, a top company official said.

The company will face stiff competition in the sub-4 metre compact SUV segment from the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Motors Nexon, Mahindra XUV300 and Honda WR-V.

The government may blacklist Tata Motors for delaying delivery of e-buses to transport departments of six cities, according to the Economic Times. The report quoted unnamed officials as saying that the automobile major might have failed to deliver the buses on time due to battery issues and delays in manufacturing.

As reported earlier by Business Standard, Tata Motors had won tenders to supply buses to Lucknow, Jammu, Kolkata, Indore, Guwahati and Jaipur under the first phase of a programme to promote the use of electric vehicles in cities.

ZoomCar could get a $500 million push from a fresh round of funding (Series E) led by Mahindra, reported Mint. ZoomCar is a self-drive-focused car rental company allowing individuals to rent vehicles by the hour, day, and week.

The company has raised $103.8 million as yet, according to CrunchBase. Last year, M&M had pumped in up to Rs 176 crore in Zoomcar India and Zoomcar Inc, its US incorporated holding parent company.

Shares of Tata Motors were trading 5 per cent higher at Rs 183 on the BSE in early morning trade after the company’s wholly-owned subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) said it expects improved financial results for the quarter ended March 2019 (Q4FY19).

In comparison, the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex was up 0.62 per cent at 38,913 level at 09:39 am.

Tata Motors Saturday said it will increase prices of its passenger vehicles range by up to Rs 25,000 from April on account of rising input costs and external economic conditions.

The company joins the likes of Toyota and Jaguar Land Rover which have also stated that they would hike prices of select models from April.
