MFA Oil Company was organized in 1929 by Missouri farmers who wanted to be assured of a reliable supply of quality petroleum products at a fair price. The first bulk plant was located at Wright City, MO and seven more plants were established the same year. The energy cooperative, controlled by its farmer-members, produces fuel and lubrication products and manages bulk petroleum and propane plants in the Central US. The company makes "Monster Diesel," a superior additive product that allows for more complete combustion in diesel engines to increase mileage, clean exhaust, and reduce engine wear. Monster Diesel, Inc. plans to change its name to Alkane, Inc. and apply for a new trading symbol that will reflect the company's focus on the alkanes in uses. Alkanes are hydrocarbons, (saturated, stable base materials) which when used in additives, enable the more efficient performance of diesel engines.

Penn Octane has taken its foot off the gas (liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG), and throttled back on the octane. Penn Octane Corporation has no assets other than its role as 75% owner and manager of Rio Vista GP LLC, the general partner of pipeline and terminal company Rio Vista Energy Partners. Once a provider of LPG transportation and storage services, in 2006 Penn Octane sold its LPG assets to TransMontaigne Product Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of TransMontaigne, for $9.8 million, to pay down debt. Penn Octane Corporation also exited its gasoline and diesel fuel reseller operations in 2008 to further pay down expenses. Former chairman Jerome Richter controls about 28% of the company.

From its warehouses and 6,780 service stations, Petrobras Distribuidora (known by the brand name BR) furnishes the nation with petroleum derivative products, including gasoline, lubes, fuel oil, hydrated alcohol, and natural gas. Petrobras Distribuidora is also building up its market position in a number of neighboring countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Uruguay.
