Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
Kawai wants to show Steinway the highway. The world's #2 musical instrument maker (behind Yamaha), Kawai makes a limited number of Shigeru Kawai hand-built grand pianos each year. Each pricey piano features a soundboard aged five years (compared to the usual one year) and is crafted using 200-year-old Ezo spruce trees. Kawai also makes other grand, upright, and digital pianos. Musical instruments and related products account for most of the company's sales. In addition, Kawai operates music and gymnastics schools, makes metal products, and sells computers and peripherals. Kawai, founded in 1927 by the father of retired chairman Shigeru Kawai, sells its products worldwide.
