American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO (AFSCME) finds strength in its numbers. The 1.6 million member labor union represents public sector employees in industries such as health care, education, social services, transportation, and public works. The group advocates and seeks legislative change for issues relating to social and economic justice in the workplace. AFSCME has more than 3,400 local unions in some 45 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The union is a member of The American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). AFSCME began in 1932 as the Wisconsin State Administrative, Clerical, Fiscal and Technical Employees Association.
