After an expansion of the factory, MBUSI can assemble as many as 200,000 vehicles a year.

Mitsubishi Motors is a small fish in the big pond of global car manufacturing. The company sells about a million cars per year (far below rival Toyota) in more than 160 countries worldwide. The 20 models of cars, trucks, minivans, and SUVs are made at its plants in Asia, Europe, and the US. Mitsubishi products include the Lancer, Galant, Eclipse, and Outlander; about eight models are limited to Japanese sales only. The company's R&D facilities are in the US, Germany, and Japan. Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries together own about a 30% stake in Mitsubishi Motors, which traces its roots to Heavy Industries' 1917 "Mitsubishi Model A" project. About 80% of sales come from outside of Japan.

Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) oversees the North American operations of Mitsubishi Motors -- including sales, manufacturing, finance, and R&D functions. The company sells Mitsubishi brand cars and SUVs through a network of almost 400 US dealers. MMNA's manufacturing division in Normal, Illinois, builds the Eclipse, Eclipse Spyder convertible, Galant sedan, and Endeavor SUV. Other models include the Outlander SUV and Lancer sedan. The Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. company is winding down production of the Raider pickup, manufactured by Chrysler, due to diminished sales. MMNA promises to launch smaller, more fuel-efficient cars, such as the Outlander Sport SUV and the electric i-MiEV mini-car.

MMC Automotores do Brasil, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Motors Corp., sells over 40,000 Brazilian vehicles a year. MMC Automotores assembles and distributes Mitsubishi brand vehicles throughout its domestic market. MMC assembles the Pajero TR4, the Sport SUV, plus the Triton pick-up truck at its plant in the centrally located state of Goias. The plant began manufacturing its first 4-wheel drive flex-fuel vehicle in 2007, capitalizing on the demand for cars that utilize alternative fuels; the Pajero TR4 Flex can run on any mixture of gasoline and ethanol. News reports indicate that certain of Mitsubishi's manufacturing may be transferred to Brazil to take advantage of the tariff-free export agreements.
