SABIC isn't meant to be an anagram for basic; that's just a happy accident. SABIC Europe manufactures basic and intermediate petrochemicals, including polyethylene, polypropylene, and other polyolefins, for customers throughout Europe. SABIC Europe is the European arm of Saudi Basic Industries (SABIC), the largest non-oil producing company in the Middle East, and one of the world's leading petrochemical producers. The company also distributes its parent's products throughout the continent; its manufacturing complexes are in Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK.

The company's marketing and distribution efforts include consumer products ranging from health care products to FUBU clothing and US Polo Association footwear.

Samsung Total Petrochemicals sticks to the basics. The company manufactures building block chemicals that go into the making of a host of other chemicals needed to make the stuff we can use. It starts with a naphtha cracker, yielding propylene and ethylene, which are the raw materials in the production of all manner of polymers. Samsung Total divides its operations in three: polymer production (polyethylene, polypropylene, high- and low-density polyethylene), base chemicals (selling the ethylene and propylene the company doesn't use itself, as well as aromatics used to make the materials that go into synthetic fibers), and petrochemicals like solvents and liquefied petroleum gases (propane, butane, etc.).

The division produces a number of commodity and specialty chemicals from its manufacturing sites and an R&D center in the US. Sasol North America is composed of what was once ConocoPhillips' chemicals unit, which was spun off as private company Vista Chemical in 1984, went public two years later, was purchased by RWE in 1991, and finally sold to Sasol in 2001.
