Northeast Utilities (NU) uses a little Yankee ingenuity (and a number of power generation plants) to keep its customers powered up. The largest utility in New England, NU supplies power to more than 2 million customers in Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts through subsidiaries Connecticut Light and Power, Public Service Company of New Hampshire, and Western Massachusetts Electric. The company's power grid encompasses more than 3,100 circuit miles of overhead transmission lines and more than 32,800 pole miles of distribution lines. NU's Yankee Gas utility provides natural gas to 205,000 customers in Connecticut. In 2010 the company offered to buy regional rival NSTAR in for $4.2 billion.

NorthWestern, once a holding company for several energy-related businesses, is now blowing in one direction only -- providing power and gas through regulated utilites. Through its NorthWestern Energy subsidiary, the company provides electricity and natural gas to about 661,000 customers in Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota. In Montana it delivers electricity to approximately 335,000 customers in 187 communities and surrounding rural areas, 15 rural electric cooperatives, and in Wyoming to the Yellowstone National Park. NorthWestern delivers gas to 180,100 Montana customers. In Nebraska and South Dakota it sells natural gas to 85,5100 customers.

Ohio Pure Water distributes a wide range of water purification and treatment equipment to customers throughout the US. Its products include chlorination systems, water softeners, water filters, reverse-osmosis equipment, UV sterilizers, and drinking water systems. Other equipment includes flexible hose units, float switches and valves, PVC air injectors, and mineral tanks and parts. The company conducts most of its sales through its Web site. Ohio Pure Water was founded in 1996 by president C. K. Moore, a former maintenance superintendent for the State of Ohio.
