University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) may be steeped in history, but its services are on the cutting edge of health care. The network of hospitals and associated care facilities serve Pennsylvania's Philadelphia County and the surrounding area. The health system provides emergency, primary, and long-term care services, as well as specialties including oncology, neurology, and cardiology. Its hospitals have a total of some 1,600 beds and include the Pennsylvania Hospital (founded by Ben Franklin), Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. UPMC is a leading not-for-profit health care delivery system for the western region of the state. UPMC operates about 20 hospitals, including campuses in the Pittsburgh area, regional and community hospitals, and specialty facilities such as Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Magee-Womens Hospital. Combined, UPMC has about 3,400 inpatient beds. In addition, the system provides care through hundreds of physician practices, outpatient clinics, cancer treatment facilities, and rehab centers; it also offers home health care, long-term care through about 15 senior living facilities, and health insurance.
