Jim Palmer Trucking offers truckload transportation of temperature-controlled cargo with a fleet of about 350 tractors and 500 trailers. The company operates throughout the US from terminals in Denver; Missoula, Montana; and Salina, Kansas. After voluntarily filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in mid-2008, the company emerged from bankruptcy in May 2009. It cited the rising costs of fuel as one of the primary reasons for its financial woes.

Knight Transportation drivers don't drive long hours into the night. The truckload carrier instead focuses on short- to medium-haul trips, averaging about 500 miles. From some 35 regional operations centers, mainly in the southern, midwestern, and western US, Knight carries such cargo as consumer goods, food and beverages, and paper products. It has a fleet of about 3,700 tractors and 8,500 trailers, including some 700 refrigerated trailers. Besides for-hire hauling, Knight provides dedicated contract carriage, in which drivers and equipment are assigned to a customer long-term. It also offers freight brokerage services. Four members of the Knight family collectively own about 30% of the company.

Koch (pronounced "cook") Companies' collection of eight operating units offers a full menu of transportation services, including truckload freight hauling, logistics, warehousing, and truck and trailer leasing. The company's operations include both long-haul and regional truckload transportation in the US 48-states, as well as capacity in Canada. It also provides dedicated contract carriage, in which drivers and equipment are often assigned to a retailer long-term. Overall it drives a fleet of about 650 tractors and 1,820 trailers. Led by its founder's second generation, Koch Companies is not related to the Kansas-based conglomerate Koch Industries, which is owned by a family that pronounces its name "coke."

Lakeville Motor Express has expanded to provide less-than-truckload (LTL) services throughout 10 states in the Midwest. (LTL carriers combine freight from multiple shippers into a single truckload.) It operates a fleet of about 900 tractors and trailers from a network of some 35 terminals. It offers service elsewhere in North America through its partners in The Reliance Network, a group of regional LTL carriers. Lakeville Motor Express also offers freight brokerage and logistics services. In December 2009 Roger Wilsey bought the company from the Wren family, which started Lakeville Motor Express in 1921. Wilsey also became CEO.

Landair Transport keeps its wheels on the ground. The truckload carrier transports general commodities and provides dedicated contract services, in which drivers and equipment are assigned to customers long-term. The company primarily operates east of the Mississippi River, employing a fleet of about 850 tractors and 2,000 trailers. It acquired Summit Logistics Services in late 2008, enabling expansion to states in the west and north. In addition to freight transportation, Landair provides logistics and warehousing and distribution services. Major customers have included John Deere, Lowe's, and Sonoco. CEO Scott Niswonger and president and COO John Tweed own the company, which Niswonger helped found in 1981.
