Through its operating companies, TransForce is one of Canada's largest providers of transportation and logistics services. Truckload carrier Transport Corporation of America wants to deliver the goods on time for manufacturers and retailers in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Long- and short-haul freight carried by Transport America includes department store merchandise, furniture, and recreational equipment, as well as consumer, grocery, industrial, and paper products. The company operates a fleet of about 1,400 tractors and 4,300 trailers; its trailer inventory is made up primarily of standard dry vans but also includes some refrigerated units. Its TA Logistics unit provides third-party logistics services. Minneapolis-based investment firm Goldner Hawn Johnson & Morrison owns Transport America, which began its operations in 1984.

Trucker Trimac tries and succeeds in its efforts to move bulk cargo across a continent. A lead transporter of liquid and dry bulk products, Trimac Transportation Services operates a fleet of about 2,200 tractors and 5,000 trailers from a network of more than 100 terminals throughout North America. Trimac's logistics unit, Bulk Plus Logistics, operates in the US and Canada and offers such services as freight brokerage, supply chain management, and transloading (transferring cargo between trucks and railcars). Trimac's Canadian operations are owned by the publicly traded Trimac Income Fund, which is controlled by chairman and CEO Jeffrey McCaig and his family. Its US operations are privately owned.

Even though it does have plenty of horsepower, don't look for truckload carrier Triple Crown Services in the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, or the Belmont Stakes. The company instead races for business in the field of intermodal transportation, which involves moving freight by multiple methods -- in this case, trucks and trains. Triple Crown maintains a fleet of about 7,500 RoadRailer trailers (manufactured by Wabash National) that can be pulled down the road by tractors or along the rails by locomotives. The company operates from more than a dozen terminals in the US and Canada. A unit of railroad operator Norfolk Southern, Triple Crown was founded in 1986.

Over hill and over dale, less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier TST Overland Express hauls freight throughout Canada. (LTL carriers consolidate cargo from multiple shippers into a single truckload.) TST Overland Express operates a fleet of more than 1,600 tractors and trailers. The company offers its customers service throughout the US via multiregional LTL carrier Estes Express Lines, its partner in the ExpressLINK alliance. TST Overland Express is a unit of TST Solutions, which in turn is owned by TransForce Income Fund. TST Overland Express was founded in 1928.
