Columbia Pictures is the studio through which Sony Pictures Entertainment produces its big budget movies. The studio was founded in 1924, and in 1982 it was purchased by Coca-Cola. Sony purchased Columbia from Coke in 1989 for $3.4 billion. The deal was the largest acquisition by a Japanese firm up to that time, and initially caused headaches for Sony due to losses from elaborate spending budgets and box office duds (Ishtar). Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group is the movie marketing, licensing, and promotions arm of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Curb Entertainment International is an independent film production and distribution firm. The company produces about three films a year and acquires an additional six to ten finished films for worldwide distribution. Curb Entertainment has a library of some 100 movies in a variety of genres. Titles include Ed's Next Move and Dummy. Curb Entertainment was founded in 1984.

DNA Films is the movie company that produced the hits 28 Days Later and Love, Actually (with Working Title Films). Run by Andrew Macdonald, who also produced The Beach and Trainspotting, the company has a production partnership with Fox Searchlight Pictures, which owns 50% of DNA Films. The company is also backed by the UK Film Council, which distributes government grants and funding from the National Lottery Commission. Fox Searchlight, which specializes in director-driven projects, handles global distribution for DNA Films.

DreamWorks Animation has produced about 20 computer-animated family-friendly features -- including box office hits such as the 3-D adventure film How to Train Your Dragon and the wildly successful movies in the highly lucrative Shrek series. Other titles include Monsters vs. Aliens and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. The studio's movies are distributed and marketed by Paramount Pictures. In 2004 former parent DreamWorks spun off DreamWorks Animation as a separate company.
