The United States Tennis Association (USTA) serves as the governing body for the sport of tennis in the US. It sets the rules of play and develops and promotes the sport at the local and professional levels. USTA also owns and operates the US Open, the annual Grand Slam event held at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York. In addition, the not-for-profit organization selects players to compete in such tournaments as the Davis Cup, the Fed Cup, and the Olympics. Founded in 1881 as the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, the USTA has grown to more than 700,000 members from all age and skill levels.

USA Track & Field (USATF) has its membership on the run -- and the discus, shot-put, decathlon, and javelin. The group is the governing body for track and field sports, long distance running, and race walking in the US. It has about 100,000 members and sanctions more than 4,000 events a year; member groups include the NCAA, Road Runners Club of America, and the National Federation of State High School Associations. The organization sets rules, promotes the sport, and selects the US track and field Olympic teams. Its nearly 60 associations direct 2,500 local clubs. USATF traces its heritage to the Amateur Athletic Union, founded in New York City in 1878.

USISL operates as United Soccer Leagues (USL) overseeing a collection of soccer divisions that compete in North America. Its USL First and Second Divisions feature a total of about 20 professional teams that compete in the US, Canada, and the Caribbean. The USL also runs amateur leagues (Premier Development League and W-League) and youth soccer leagues (Super-20 League and Super Y-League). It is affiliated with the US Soccer Federation, along with Major League Soccer (MLS). USL began as the Southwest Indoor Soccer League in 1986; it was formed by president Francisco Marcos.

The Washington Capitals professional hockey franchise joined the National Hockey League in 1974 and has reached the Stanley Cup finals just once, losing to the Detroit Red Wings in 1998. The team was founded by Abe Pollin, the late owner of the Washington Wizards, and plays host at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. Monumental Sports & Entertainment, a holding company formed in 2010 and controlled by Ted Leonsis, owns the Caps franchise along with the Wizards, the Washington Mystics of the WNBA, and the Verizon Center.

The Washington State Public Stadium Authority is the public partner and owner of the $430 million Qwest Field and Event Center (formerly Seahawks Stadium and Exhibition Center), home of the Seattle Seahawks. The authority owns the stadium, while Seahawks owner Paul Allen's First & Goal operates the facility. The stadium opened in 2002 on the site of the former Kingdome, in the Pioneer Square neighborhood near downtown Seattle. The two facilities (the event/exhibition center opened in 1999) are close to Puget Sound and just north of Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners.
