Midwest Air Group aims to run a champagne airline in beer country. From hubs in Milwaukee and Kansas City, the company's Midwest Airlines serves major US business centers and leisure destinations. It operates a fleet of about 10 Boeing 717s and promotes such perks as wide leather seats and fresh-baked, chocolate chip cookies. With regional affiliate Midwest Connect, Midwest Airlines serves about 30 destinations, largely in the upper Midwest. Midwest also hauls cargo, offers charter flights, and provides ground-based airport services. Founded in 1984, Midwest was acquired by Republic Airways Holdings in July 2009.

Minnesota weather can be gloomy, so MN Airlines aims to be a ray of sunshine. The carrier, which does business as Sun Country Airlines, provides flights to about 30 popular tourist destinations in North America and the Caribbean from its hub in Minneapolis/St. Paul. US cities served by the carrier include Las Vegas; Los Angeles; New York; Orlando, Florida; Phoenix and San Francisco. Sun Country also offers flights to selected destinations in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. The carrier operates a fleet of about a dozen Boeing 737-800s. Diversified consumer products company Petters Group Worldwide owns Sun Country, which is operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Formerly known for its non-stop service to parts of sub-Saharan Africa, North American Airlines is sticking to the skies a little closer to home these days. The US-certified air carrier announced in 2008 that it would eliminate routes to Africa, citing rising fuel costs as the impetus behind its decision. The carrier offers air transportation services throughout the world for the US military (its largest customer) and commercial clientele. Founded in 1989, North American is primarily a charter airline, operating a fleet of 10 passenger aircraft. A subsidiary of Global Aviation Holdings, North American operates out of headquarters at JFK International Airport in New York City.

For now, you can still fly Northwest -- at least until the logos on the planes change to "Delta." Northwest Airlines, which was acquired by Delta Air Lines for $2.8 billion in late 2008, transports passengers and cargo to about 240 cities in North America, the Asia/Pacific region, and Europe. Its US network includes locations served by regional carriers flying as Northwest Airlink. Northwest's fleet includes about 320 jets; regional partners operate another 200 aircraft. The acquisition by Delta created the largest airline in the world by traffic. Once the integration of the two carriers is complete, Delta will operate a fleet of about 775 aircraft and serve more than 375 destinations worldwide.

Malaysian government-owned holding company Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad (PMB) is working to help Malaysian Airlines regain financial altitude. PMB was formed in 2002 as part of the restructuring of Malaysian Airline System (MAS) and its Malaysian Airlines unit. The restructuring gave PMB ownership of the carrier's fleet, which it leases back to MAS. PMB assumed MAS's long-term debt and took responsibility for the airline's money-losing domestic operations, but in 2006 the government reassigned most domestic routes to AirAsia and MAS reassumed its remaining domestic business. PMB owns a 52% stake in MAS and buys, sells, and leases aircraft and aircraft engines through subsidiary Aircraft Business Malaysia.
