Queenston Mining is searching for Pandora's box, and hoping there is gold to be found within. Queenston Mining company owns, wholly and through joint ventures, about 20 gold properties in Canada. Its Wood-Pandora project includes 45 mineral claims in Quebec's top gold producing area. The Kirkland Lake project comprises 855 claims in one of Ontario's top gold producing camps. Queenston has joint venture agreements with Kirkland Lake Gold and with Globex Mining Enterprises. In 2010 Queenston Mining company agreed to buy Vault Minerals, which also owns properties in the Kirkland Lake region.

RAG is no ragtag operation. RAG company is Germany's largest coal producer, its mining operations managed through coal and coke company Deutsche Steinkohle. RAG operates seven coal mines and a coking facility, all in Germany. After several years of restructuring, RAG company has pared down significantly to just the coal operations. It is now controlled by the state-run RAG Foundation. In 2007 the German government announced that conditions in the country -- both economic and environmental -- made continuation of coal mining infeasible. And so the German coal industry will cease operations by 2018.

In 2009 the company acquired a 45% interest in the Kibali project, which now stands at 9.2 million ounces of reserves and is one of the largest undeveloped gold deposits in Africa. Randgold also has an extensive portfolio of organic growth prospects, which is constantly replenished by intensive exploration programmes in Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, DRC, Mali and Senegal.

Red Back produces about 250,000 ounces annually and has around 3 million ounces of proved and probable reserves. Red Back Mining company also has exploration projects elsewhere in Ghana and Mauritania and holds a minority interest in West African assets held by the Australian Mineral Deposits Limited. Toronto-based Kinross Gold acquired Red Back in 2010 in a $7 billion stock deal.
