Greyston Bakery, Inc.
Greyston Bakery company employs the chronically unemployed (ex-convicts, ex-substance abusers), getting them off the streets and into the workforce. It produces brownies in varieties that include chocolate fudge, espresso, walnut -- and though some purists might beg to differ -- blondies. All bakery profits go to the Greyston Foundation, which funds a variety of social programs including child-care centers and health clinics. The bakery's award-winning sweets have been served at the White House and it is the sole supplier of brownie products for Ben & Jerry's. was founded in 1982 by Zen Buddhist priest (and applied mathematician and aerospace engineer) Bernard Tetsugen Glassman.
