Century Aluminum Co. which is owned by Koch Enterprises, first began operating in 1996. Century Aluminum Company (Century) is engaged in producing aluminum. The primary aluminum capacity includes the facility in Grundartangi, Iceland with capacity of 260,000 metric tons per year (mtpy), the facility in Hawesville, Kentucky (Hawesville) with capacity of 244,000 mtpy; a facility in Ravenswood, West Virginia (Ravenswood), currently curtailed, with capacity of 170,000 mtpy; and a 49.7% interest in a facility in Mt. Holly, South Carolina (Mt. Holly), which provides with capacity of 111,000 mtpy. In addition to the primary aluminum assets, the Company also have a 40% stake in Baise Haohai Carbon Co., Ltd. (BHH), a carbon anode and cathode facility located in the People’s Republic of China. In March 2009, Century curtailed one potline at the Hawesville facility. It is operating four potlines with a capacity of 195,000 mtpy. In February 2009, the Company curtailed all the operations at the Ravenswood facility.

When the aluminum century rolls around, it'll be ready. Century Aluminum makes primary molten and ingot aluminum at facilities in Kentucky and West Virginia, as well as in Iceland; that last facility is operated by subsidiary Nordural. Century Aluminum also owns just less than 50% of an aluminum production facility in South Carolina (Alcoa owns the rest). Four customers -- aluminum producer Rio Tinto Alcan, diversified metals company BHP Billiton, commodities trader Glencore International, and wire and cable maker Southwire -- account for about three-quarters of Century Aluminum's sales. Glencore is Century Aluminum's former parent, though it still has a 38% stake in the company.

CITIC Resources invests in energy and minerals exploration, development, and trading, focusing on oil exploration in mainland China, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan. The company was formerly engaged in the manufacturing and distribution of plywood but switched gears in 2004, the same year that China-owned investment group CITIC took a controlling stake. Since then it has built up an international portfolio of holdings including interests in Portland Aluminum Smelter (one of the largest in the world), the Coppabella and Moorvale coal mines in Queensland, and commodities trader CITIC Australia Trading. CITIC Group indirectly owns 54% of CITIC Resources.

Columbia Falls Aluminum's smelting operations produces about 170,000 tons of aluminum annually. Its ingot, sheet, and bar products are sold to aluminum rolling mills and extrusion plants; its customers are located primarily in the US. Swiss natural resources conglomerate Glencore has owned Columbia Falls Aluminum since 1999. Among Glencore's other aluminum operations are Sherwin Alumina and Century Aluminum Company.

Comital S.p.A. has sold its hose and compound rubber manufacturing interests in order to concentrate on aluminum rolled products (foils and metal plastic yarns), consumer products (food packaging and cleaning products), and cords and cables (bare copper, enameled, and insulated). The Comital Group has about 20 production facilities in Italy and elsewhere. In 2003 the former Saiag was taken over by the Italian company Cortiplast, which is controlled by the family of Comital's chairman, Cornelio Valetto, and the next year Saiag and subsidiary Comital merged to form the new company.
