Universities Research Association (URA) is a consortium of 89 research-oriented universities organized in 1965 to oversee and operate selected national research facilities. The URA and the University of Chicago are the prime contractors in charge of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), one of the world's largest high-energy particle accelerators. (The URA was the sole contractor from 1967-2006). The URA also manages the $100 million Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory Project. URA receives funding primarily from the US Department of Energy, NASA, and the National Science Foundation. Universities Research Association, Inc. membership mostly consists of US universities but also includes institutions from Canada, Italy, and Japan.
