RIF seeks to increase children's interest in reading by providing motivational support, family involvement, and free books the children get to choose. Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. is supported by the US Department of Education and donations from foundations, companies, and individuals. Margaret McNamara began the program in 1966 with a group of school volunteers in Washington D.C.

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D) makes the written word accessible to individuals with print disabilities, such as blindness, visual impairments, and dyslexia. The not-for-profit group makes tapes and CDs of textbooks for students in kindergarten through postgraduate studies, as well as recordings of reference and professional materials. In 2008 its 240,000 members borrowed or purchased some 530,000 books. RFB&D operates recording studios through half a dozen regional offices and is beginning to use digital recording.
