California State University, Chico
CSU Chico, or Chico State, opened its doors in 1889 as Chico State Normal School. No longer a teacher-training school only, the university has more than 60 undergraduate majors, offered by its seven colleges. Enrollment is about 15,000, including some 2,000 graduate students. The school has a large College of Agriculture, which offers degrees in agribusiness, animal science, and plant science, as well as focusing on applied agricultural research.
In 2005 hackers broke into the university's computer system, stealing the names and Social Security numbers of more than 59,000 people, including prospective students as well as current and former students and faculty members.
