Iroquois was created in response to dramatic increases in natural gas demand and anticipated future needs. Fresh from the energy crisis of the 1970s, the Northeast Region found itself increasingly dependent on petroleum products. The discovery of vast reserves of natural gas in Western Canada during the 80’s opened up new possibilities allowing for the creation of a new partnership, designed to link the Canadian supplies with the Northeast markets. Since beginning full operations in 1992, we have expanded our system to meet the needs of our customers while minimizing the impact on local communities. Through the addition of seven compressor stations, a 36-mile marine pipeline extension and 1.6-miles of pipeline loop, Iroquois has operationally doubled the amount of natural gas transported on its system.

What it is is a subsidiary of National Cooperative Refinery Association that transports more than 110,000 barrels per day of crude oil via both intrastate and interstate pipelines in Kansas. It operates 1,200 miles of gathering and trunk lines throughout Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. It also manages the business of Kaw Pipe Line Company. National Cooperative Refinery Association provides three farm supply cooperatives (Cenex Harvest States, GROWMARK, and MFA Oil) with fuel through its oil refinery in Kansas.

The company holds stakes in or more than 28,000 miles of natural gas and petroleum product pipelines and owns 170 bulk terminals and rail transloading facilities that handle more than 87 million tons of coal, petroleum coke, and bulk products annually. KMP transports refined petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel) through 8,300 miles of pipelines and stores the products in 60 terminals in the US. Through its CO2 subsidiary, KMP transports carbon dioxide. Knight owns 13.9% of KMP, and through its Kinder Morgan Management unit, acts as general partner.

This can get Kinder complicated: Kinder Morgan Management (KMM) was created in 2001 by pipeline operator Knight (formerly Kinder Morgan, Inc., or KMI), to become general partner of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMP). KMM oversees KMP's business segments: pipelines that transport refined petroleum products (including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and natural gas liquids); natural gas pipelines; pipelines that transport carbon dioxide for oil field use; bulk terminals that handle coal, petroleum coke, and other products; and liquids terminals that handle refined petroleum products and chemicals. Knight controls KMM and, indirectly, KMP.
