The college offers Bachelor of Arts in about 30 subjects and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in art and art history. It employs some 130 full-time faculty members and has an enrollment of almost 2,000. Albion can trace its roots to 1835 when early Methodist settlers of the Michigan Territory worked to get the college a charter from the Michigan Territorial Legislature. Albright College is the oldest institution of higher learning in Berks County and is located on a 118-acre suburban campus nestled at the foot of Mount Penn in Reading, Pa., a city of 80,000. The College dates its beginning to the founding of Union Seminary in 1856. The present Albright College was formed by a series of mergers with other institutions of higher learning founded in the 19th century by the Evangelical Association and the United Evangelical Church. Union and Schuylkill Seminaries were not theological seminaries, but were three-year collegiate institutes. The College's rigorous liberal arts curriculum has an interdisciplinary focus. Albright’s hallmarks are connecting fields of learning, collaborative teaching and learning, and a flexible curriculum that allows students to create an individualized education. Fully half of Albright students have concentrations that combine two or three fields of learning.

Alfred University was a progressive bastion of learning from the start. A private university in Western New York, the small non-sectarian school serves about 2,400 students. Its academic programs range from the liberal arts and sciences to engineering, business, and art and design, with degrees from a bachelor's to a Ph.D. The school also houses the New York State College of Ceramics. The student-faculty ratio is 12-to-1. The university was founded as the Select School in 1836, providing a coeducational environment from the school's beginnings. Alfred University (and the village it's in) is named for Alfred the Great, ninth-century ruler of southern England. Its mascot is, of course, the Saxons.

Allegheny College, co-educational liberal arts school was founded in 1815 with a class of just four students. Today, approximately 2,100 enrolled students can pursue Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in more than 50 academic programs; the college requires students to declare both a major and minor. Departments with the most graduates include biology, chemistry, neuroscience, English, political science, and psychology. About half of Allegheny's students go on to pursue graduate degrees.
