Cochin was originally known as Perumpadappu Nad after a village in the Ponnani Taluk of Malabar. The name Cochin was given to the town that came into existence after the formation of the harbour in 1341.

The Cochin Steamer Agents' Association (CSAA) was established in 1978 to take care of the interests of the shipping community mainly Steamer Agents operating out of Cochin.
