The Ministry of Food Processing Industries, set up in July 1988, is the main central agency of the Government responsible for developing a strong and vibrant food processing sector; with a view to create increased job opportunities in rural areas, enable the farmers to reap benefit from modern technology, create surplus for exports and stimulating demand for processed food.

The formation of the Ministry of Science and Technology was announced through a Presidential Notification dated January 4, 1985 contained in the 164th Amendment of the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961; the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Scientific and industrial Research, and the Department of Biotechnology are the departments under this ministry.
