In the year 1925, the Setalvad Committee on the University Reform in the Province of Bombay published their report.The Government of Baroda and its people had for a long time desired to have a separate University of their own. The affiliation of all the institutions of higher education to a University situated far away was not conductive to the development of new courses of instruction suited to the needs of the region.

Maharshi Dayanand University is a public university located at Rohtak, Haryana, India. Established in 1976 Over 490 Institutions/Colleges of general education, Engineering, Technology, Computer Sciences and Management Sciences located in 10 districts of the State are affiliated to this University.

Mahatma Gandhi University was established in 2007 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh (GOAP) through GO Ms no 19 of the Education Department.Presently the University has six post graduate courses i.e.MA Applied Economics,English,Master of financial control (MFC),M.Sc.Mathematics, MCA and MBA.The University has plans to start some more courses like Physics,Chemistry,Bio-technology etc.

It will offer courses in Urdu medium at Certificate, Diploma,Graduate,Post-graduate and Research levels (M. Phil and Ph.D),through Campus and Distance mode. The University will design its courses in Science and Technology, Commerce,Management fields etc.with a strong emphasis on English.

The Nalanda Open University is the only University in the State of Bihar meant for imparting learning exclusively through the system of distance education.
